For the enhancement of safe and reliable performance of engineering products it is vital for experts from the various disciplines to intensify their co-operation and mutual understanding. The articles in this volume report on the impact of failure research, damage prevention and fracture mechanics on advanced and less advanced technology, product liability and technical insurance. The contributions represent an interdisciplinary and inter-professional co-operation and exchange of concepts and experience, stimulating the cross-fertilization of ideas between scientists, engineers, lawyers, attorneys, managers, technical insurers and other experts from academia, government and private industry. The selection of papers provides a general overview of the many facets of failure analysis, product liability and technical insurance, and their mutual relationship.
