Description

The 1960s and 1970s saw a wide-ranging debate on the growth of capitalist production in Indian agriculture, which soon became known as "the mode of production" debate. This volume contains a selection of the articles, originally published in "Economic and Political Weekly", which constitute the corpus of the debate. The contributors bring out the basic conceptual issues behind the debate: what is agricultural "capitalism" particularly in an ex-colonial country; how are "feudalism" and "semi-feudalism" to be conceptualized; and in what way do landlord-tenant constrain productive development and how do they shape the contours of capitalist accumulation.
