内容説明

Drawing on official sources, this book presents new factual information about Russian society before and after the attempted coup of August 1991. Statistical data on social trends and social conditions are presented in tabular form and are complemented by passages of translated text. The final chapter reports the results of public opinion surveys conducted in each month of the year following the coup attempt. One intention which underlies the organization of material is to emphasize the essentially multi-ethnic character of the Russian Federation. A separate but related objective is to document the extent of variation in key social indicators as between regions and as between urban and rural areas. Thanks to the policy of glasnost, it is possible to report detailed information relating to topics which until a few years ago, were partly or wholly "hidden" from the Russian public. Examples are: the incidence of diseases, causes of death, environmental pollution and crime. Amongst the recently emerging trends recorded here is the "demographic crisis" arising from an excess of deaths over births. Other data which reveal striking aspects of everyday reality in Russian include evidence on persisting qualities. Michael Ryan is the co-author of "Social Trends in the Soviet Union since 1950" with Richard Prentice, and author of "Doctors and the State in the Soviet Union".
