This book gives an interdisciplinary overview of the problems and topics inherent in the design and applications of high-energy galvanic cells and batteries, together with present limitations and possible development. It presents the theoretical fundamentals necessary for obtaining an insight into the various physical and chemical factors which determine the mechanism of action and the failure of galvanic cells. There is a detailed discussion of the thermodynamics and kinetics of electrode processes and transport phenomena in cells. The properties and functioning of many different types of materials used as cathodes, anodes, electrolytes and solvents in non-aqueous cells are also described.
