The second edition has a substantial new introduction which analyzes ugly contemporary aberrations, such as the low esteem accorded to women, exorbitant dowry demands, bride burning, and other forms of harassment and victimization of women in general and wives in particular, relating these to North Indian marriage traditions and previous research.
