内容説明

Following an opportunity to interview Broadmoor's patients and doctors in confidence and privacy, the authors describe how men who commit offences come to be sent to Broadmoor, their criminal and psychiatric histories, the treatment provided in the hospital and the procedures and decision-making relating to discharge. The book also reports, often in their own words, the opinions of the men and their doctors about the hospital's work. The book is in two parts. The first deals with patients suffering from psychotic illnesses. The second is about the offenders detained under the legal category of psychopathic disorder. The authors conclude that the compulsory hospital detention of such offenders is unjustified and recommend major changes in law and practice. The work is intended to be of value to those concerned with the practice, teaching and administration of the criminal and mental health laws, of forensic psychiatry, of penal affairs and human rights as well as doctors, nurses, psychologists, academics and administrators working in these fields.
