A book which had its origin in a series of articles Alexander Bain wrote for "Mind" (the journal he had helped to found) in 1879 and 1880. Written in Bain's characteristically dry, matter-of-fact manner, the work provides an outline of Mill's life, an account of his main works, and acute but essentially sympathetic criticism.
