Description and Table of Contents

Description

This manual evolved from requests for an expanded version of what has come to be known as "the baby book" to "Essentials of Pediatric Intensive Care". It represents a condensation of vital information from essentials and an expansion of requisite data contained in its Pocket Companion. To provide rapid access to information vital to bedside treatment, it is divided into three parts - Part 1, Procedures; Part 2, Disease States and Treatment Approaches, and Part 3, Normal Values, PRISM, and TISS Scores. To further assist the reader in locating information, outlines of chapter topics with accompanying page numbers introduce each chapter and all tables and figures are listed at the back of the book. Because certain procedures are peculiar to specific disease state, they are incorporated in pertinent chapters. The procedures necessary for initial diagnosis and stabilization of the critically ill child are organized together in Part 1. Whereas the Pocket Companion was the appendix to the larger text, this manual is intended to be the "Peripheral brain" for all those health care givers immersed in the fast paced, information-packed environment of the paediatric intensive care unit.
