In the 30 years of their existence, playgroups have provided an immensely valuable service, but changing economic and social conditions have threatened their future. This book examines the relationship between playgroups, nursery education and local authorities, looking at the effect of education policy and at local authority support. It describes the evolution of playgroups and takes a careful look at scenarios for their future development. Conclusions point to the urgent need for a comprehensive, coherent national policy for services for the under-fives if playgroups are to continue to maintain an important role.
