As a whole, the series (Volumes I-V) presents an authoritative survey of the artist's oeuvre, from 1916 to his death in 1967. The text provides a systematic survey of his oil paintings (I-III), objects (II-III), bronzes (III), gouaches, temperas, watercolours and papiers colles (IV). These volumes provide a lively and informed art-historical commentary with substantial extracts from Magritte's correspondance, given in both the original French and in English translation. Volume V completes the series that is widely recognised as an indispensible reference for Magritte scholars and admirers alike.

In 1992 Mercatorfonds was asked by the Menil Foundation to publish the scholarly catalogue of Rene Magritte's complete works which was composed under the guidance of David Sylvester. The five-volume catalogue of which the last volume was published in 1997 contains a biography of the artist set out as a detailed and comprehensively documented chronology supported by black-and-white illustrations. In the catalogue notes every work in addition to the usual technical data is also extensively discussed with references to and quotations from letters and other documents. This information is also supported by black-and-white reproductions of the work involved and of comparative material. The catalogue is published only in English; quotations are however given in the original language. The catalogue is only sold as a complete set; individual volumes are not available.
