This guide offers advice on selecting dispute resolution systems, and focuses on arbitration and alternative dispute resolution procedures. Among the topics covered are: choosing an appropriate institution or set of rules; distinctions between international and national institutions, and regional "centres"; choosing the arbitrators; choosing the applicable law, "general principles", the "lex mercatoria" and amiable composition; choosing the place of arbitration; special situations such as multiparty arbitration and state immunity; and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms. The appendices include model clauses and a list of signatures to the New York Convention of 1958.
