Industrial policy is a term that generates strong emotions in Europe. For some it is the key to the future, for others it is an unforgiveable sin against free trade. In "Meeting the Global Challenge", Martin Bangemann argues that the only way forward is for European businesses of all sizes to work together in order to improve their competitiveness in the world market. He believes that industry can only do this if a relaxed and open dialogue is conducted between industry and government. By analysis of various industries (shipbuilding, car manufacture, aviation, electronics and biotechnology) the future for industry is mapped out, and the route to success for European businesses suggested.
