Description

Based on original anthropological fieldwork and extensive archival research, this timely book describes in detail the development of an irrigation project in Turkana District, Kenya, a semi-desert area where serious drought and famine have been common throughout this century. A wide spectrum of demographic and health parameters are estimated for the irrigation project community to assess the public health impact of both planned and unintentional environmental and cultural changes that accompanied development. This monograph is of great interest to anthropologists, africanists, demographers and the public health community, and of special relevance to development planners in other drought-stressed areas of tropical Africa.
