The law of maritime salvage originated nearly 3000 years ago, yet it is constantly developing to meet modern needs and circumstances, not least environmental protection. The first edition of Brice appeared in 1983. Since then there have been important developments in salvage law, in particular the London Salvage Convention 1989 and with it the latest edition of Lloyd's Open Form, "LOF 1990". The new edition of Brice explores in depth the scope and application of the new Convention and LOF 1990 with reference to background material. It explains how salvage is to be assessed, and the full workings of the new scheme of "special compensation" under article 14 of the Convention in cases where damage to the environment is threatened. There is a detailed explanation of the duties on salvors and the owners of salved property (and others), together with an analysis of the controversial topic of the way in which damages are to be assessed and set off and the application of the principles of limitation of liability. Reference is made not only to historical material but to jurisprudence in the United States of America and elsewhere.
