Description

When L-dopa exploded on to the parkinsonian scene, a quarter of a century ago, it blew away the fundamental misconception that the disease is untreatable and triggered off a surge of investigation which continues to this day. One of the major players on this stage over the years has been Professor Merton Sandler. On his recent retirement, his scientific peers met to do him honour and have dedicated this volume to him. The startling diversity of contributions by leaders in this research field shows that the force of inquiry continues as powerfully as ever; our knowledge of the Psychobiology of Parkinson's Disease still seems to be in a phase of logarithmic growth. Recent findings not only provide new hope for the treatment of this disorder but help to shed light on the mechanisms of other degenerative brain disorders - and even of natural ageing itself.
