Description and Table of Contents

Description

This reference book describes in detail the 78 neolithic chambered cairns known to exist in the county of Caithness, the north-east corner of the Scottish mainland. Following the same format as their earlier book, "The Chambered Cairns of Orkney" (EUP, 1989), the authors list the localities and references for each cairn, and provide a full description of the existing structures, with a summary account of the results of excavation where necessary. A full inventory of the cairns' contents in included and the first half of the book discusses the interpretation and archaeological significance of the monuments. The Caithness cairns have been re-surveyed since the last report on the area ("The Chambered Tombs of Scotland") - this new book expands and updates the material. As the only well-documented and comprehensive guide to the Caithness chambered cairns it will be an indispensible reference source for the Neolithic period in Europe.
