内容説明
Governments throughout Australia have been confronted with a daunting array of problems in the 1980s and 1990s. These include severe constraints on public enterprise, a crisis in the state banking system, concerns about environmental degradation and demands for recognition of multicultural and women's issues. This new agenda has produced new political pressures, new policy responses and new leadership styles. In South Australia, the 1980s and early 1990s have seen a sustained period of Labour rule following the ALP's return to power in November 1982 under the leadership of John Bannon. Whereas the 1970s had been a period of innovation and reform under the Dunstan Labour Government, the Bannon decade has been radically different. The politics of reform have given way to the politics of restraint. "The Bannon Decade" examines and assesses political, policy and managerial developments in South Australia since November 1982. Specially prepared essays by a wide range of experts cover both the broad sweep of political events and the details of policy changes in all the important portfolios: education, the environment, criminal justice, social welfare, the arts and many others.
The book explains the significance of John Bannon's austere leadership style, of the State Bank crash, of the politics of the Grand Prix, of the Multi-Function Polis, of changing public-sector managerial structures, of the policy tensions between development and the environment.
