Description
When this book was first published in 1987, it was widely recognized as a comprehensive and definitive work on the economics of the welfare state - its efficiency, its fairness, and its relevance to the entire population, not just to the poor. This revised edition takes account of the major changes in recent years and includes new sections on the definition and objectives of the welfare state, health care systems, child benefits, higher education reforms, and insurance. The concluding chapter explains the inability of the Reagan and Thatcher governments to roll back the frontiers of the welfare state.
