Description

Between the success of the Stockton & Darlington Railway in 1825 and the grouping of the railways 100 years later, the railway map of Britain grew into a complex network of some 200 independent railway companies, which had resulted from the promotion, building and amalgamation of almost 1,000. The companies, great and small, are detailed in this encyclopaedia.
