Description and Table of Contents

Description

This text was designed primarily for anaesthetists preparing for the final part of the FCAnaes examination. The aim of the editors was to provide for the first time, within a single work, virtually all the anaesthetic information required by a candidate with a sound knowledge of medicine and surgery. In attempting to achieve this objective, it follows that the text will also be valuable for tutors and supervisors of trainee anaesthetists and established consultants requiring a comprehensive and readily available source of reference. In the second edition, the editors have built upon the success of the first by commissioning from the contributors a thorough revision and updating to reflect the changes which have taken place in the last few years. In particular, care has been taken to cover recent developments in the management of acute and chronic pain and in intensive care practice. There is enhanced coverage of physiology and pharmacology as applied to anaesthesia, with new chapters on the haematological system and hepatic physiology. There are also new chapters on the clinical use of muscle relaxants and the monitoring of neuromuscular transmission, nausea, vomiting and anti-emetics, statistics and clinical trials and on pain relief in children.
