Taking as a starting point the tragedy of over 300 people in Bangalore killed after drinking poisonous illicit liquor, this book examines the political, social and economic conditions in urban India today. The author examines the causes of such disasters and the response to it by institutions such as the medical services, the press, courts, police, bureaucracy, politicians and voters, in order to understand how a typical urban `system' works amid crisis in India today.
