Decentralization of fund raising and development is increasingly common in American higher education. Most university presidents, even those supported by a well-staffed development office, can no longer manage all the relationships with potential major contributors. Donors themselves often prefer contact with people working directly in areas of their particular academic interest. As a result, academic deans and other administrators are becoming more involved with fund raising for their college or department - sometimes in cooperation, sometimes in conflict, with the development activities of the university as a whole. This book explains why it is important for deans to become more involved in fund raising and describes how they can do so effectively. Hall outlines methods for setting goals, building an infrastructure and managing volunteers. She tells how to identify and contact donors, how to ask them for a gift and how to maintain their good will and interest. She also makes a case for providing the dean with expert staff support - including an academic unit development officer.
