Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) is primarily intended for the reuse of data and can be used equally for business information and publishing systems. SGML is device-dependent, and therefore is able to transcend changes to hardware or software over a period of many years. This text demonstrates the potential value of SGML, covering the standards for text description and processing languages developed by the International Organization of Standardization (IOS).
