In an analysis of the most important modern productions, Hugh Richmond offers a new reading of "King Henry VIII". The play itself held an important place in the development of the English stage and Richmond discusses early performances: the first, probably supervised by Shakespeare, was followed, during the Restoration, by Davenant. Their modern influence is explored through accounts of five major 20th-century productions: by Tree, Guthrie, Nunn, Billington and Davies. Early directors strove to achieve an historical authenticity by an increasingly elaborate reconstruction of Tudor settings, costumes and manners. This process culminated in Tree's first cinematic recording of an historic spectacular, and the BBC's televised version shot on location at Penshurst and Leeds Castle. Hugh Richmond also discusses key performances by actors such as Sarah Siddons, Anthony Quayle and Peggy Ashcroft, and draws on his own first-hand experiences as editor and producer of the play.
