Description and Table of Contents
Description
The first edition of "Color Atlas of Renal Diseases" published in 1973 was limited to pathology and thus of appeal mainly to pathologists and trainees. For the second edition, the coverage has been widened to include the clinical as well as the pathological aspects of kidney disease. The format of this edition has been expanded to allow the integration of clear, informative text and clinical material alongside the existing pathology. The atlas will guide the reader throught the full range of disease entities via clinical presentation investigations, epidemiology, gross pathology and histology. Key references accompany each section. Introductory chapters emphasize the collaborative roles of the nephrologist and pathologist and outline the presentation of specimens and disease processes. Routine investigations by biochemistry, haematology and microbiology with reference to the contribution made by imunologic and immunogenetic techniques are explained along with illustration and application of new imaging methods such as ultrasound, CT, MR and electronmicroscopy.
The role of biopsy in the investigation of renal failure is highlighted as an important diagnostic method and one which is carried out routinely in nephology departments. A section on the normal structure and function of the kidney is followed by developmental abnormalities, infections, vascular disorders, nephritis, tubular disease, the kidney and systemic disease, renal stones (fully updated to include lithotripsy) and hydronephrosis. The indications for and effects of renal transplantation contribute a major section reflecting current developments.
