Description
An in-depth exploration of the fundamentals of physical chemistry especially designed for a first course in the subject. "Physical Chemistry" presents basic thermodynamic and quantum concepts - for example reversibility, chemical potential, probability density, bases, superposition - in a methodical and accessible style. Statistical thermodynamics is approached in an accessible way - beginning with a discussion that requires only basic mathematics to demonstrate macroscopic thermodynamics so that thermodynamics can be covered independently of statistical thermodynamics. The most important derivations, such as Maxwell's relation and applications in thermodynamics, and the origins of the Schrodinger equations are covered in detail, and there are separate chapters covering the more advanced topics; dipole moments, intermolecular forces and the magnetic properties of materials. The worked examples (300) and exercises/problems (1,200) have been carefully co-ordinated with the text throughout.
