In this book, the authors argue that policy-makers were so preoccupied with fiscal problems that they ignored East Germany's anaemic production, inflated employment, and decayed infrastructure. They contend that politicians were unwilling to confront constituent elements within the economic and the human costs of restructuring the East German economy and society. The authors urge adoption of hard-headed, medium-term strategies so that west and east can grow closer and enjoy economic growth.
