Description

This work explores the economic development of Europe during the critical period of industrialization for much of the continent, from 1750-1914. It eschews the traditional approach of studying the major countries nation-by-nation and replaces it with a continent-wide thematic study which deals with each of the main economic sectors in turn. The separate chapters cover the macro-economy, agriculture, demography, enterprise, technology, transport, investment, urbanization and foreign trade. Each chapter is written by a specialist in that particular sector of the European economy and brings together the latest research in the area. The contributors examine the developments of each of these economic sectors, and also provide an assessment of the inter-relationship between sectors and the overall trends during these two centuries.

Table of Contents

  • The European dimension to the modern world, Derek H. Aldcroft
  • population, migration and labour supply, Neil L. Tranter
  • the transformation of agriculture, Roger Price
  • enterprise and management, Roy Church
  • industry and technical change, Alan Lougheed
  • transport and communications, Simon P. Ville
  • foreign trade and economic growth, James Foreman-Peck
  • investment and finance, P.L. Cottrell
  • urban development, Paul M. Hohenberg.
