The use of heterologous expression as a means to study membrane proteins is becoming widespread. Laboratories interested in a wide range of different aspects of membrane proteins are beginning to appreciate the power of molecular biology when applied to membrane proteins, and as a consequence, more and more laboratories world wide are initiating programmes designed to express membrane proteins in different systems. This book is a simple to read laboratory manual describing the principles behind the commonly used expression systems, e.g. Escherichia coli, baculovirus, oocytes, cell culture systems and yeast, providing the user with the detailed experimental protocols for the use of these systems, and methods for the subsequent analysis of the expressed proteins. Each chapter contains a simple explanation of the system, a set of detailed protocols, a trouble-shooting guide and some examples of membrane proteins expressed in this system to date.
