Description

A combination of two texts - "Socrates to Sartre" (1993) and "Philosophical Problems" (1994), this work offers an introduction to the history of philosopy. Book I presents the author's survey of major ideas and figures in philosopy. Newly added contributions from philosophers Simone de Beauvoir, Richard Rorty and Maurice Merleau-Ponty channel the flow of philosophical controversies and ongoing dialogue into the 20th century. Book II contains many primary source readings, and features new selections from both classical and contemporary writers of philosophy, such as: Bertrand Russell on appearance and reality, Carol Gilligan and Joyce Trebilcot. The writings of David Swenson, A.J. Ayer, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Leo Tolstoy ("My Confession") comprise a new section on human destiny.
