More and more is being demanded of the UN system at a time when economic entrenchment throughout the industrialized world has made the system less and less able to respond. Yet, as this book suggests, the solutions to both the crisis of the world economy and that of the UN system may be linked. Twice in the past - in the generation before World War I and the generation after World War II - unprecedented innovation within industrial economies has gone hand in hand with effective world organizations central to the governance of a growing international industrial economy. This book explores the role those world organizations play, how they have been created, why successive world orders have broken down and how they can be reconstructed. The text examines regional economic institutions throughout the industrial world, combining information usually only found in separate works on international relations, business history and development studies.
