内容説明

This text examines the natural history of the non-domestic Candidae, or wild dog. It includes discussion of the multiple species of wolves, foxes, coyotes and jackals. The distribution, habitat, physical characteristics, taxonomy, diet, reproduction, social organization and behaviour of 33 species are discussed. With over 600 sources cited, this book is designed to be used as a reference source. The Canids, or dogs, are perhaps the one group of animals that humans have had the most longstanding associations with, beginning in prehistoric times when dogs were domesticated. Both ecologically and behaviourally, wild dogs are distinguished by their diversity and adaptability. However, over half the species of wild dogs known today are threatened due, in a large part, to human persecution and habitat destruction.
