A key principle of the Children Act 1989, was that those involved in providing services should work "in partnership" with families and children who may be in need. But how do you work in partnership? A second principle was "to balance the rights of children to be consulted, the rights of parents to exercise their responsibilities and the duty of the state to promote and protect children in need or at risk." Has this balance been achieved or is this incompatible with the partnership principle? This book brings together the key partners; the voice of the family - the Family Rights Group; the voice of the child - young people who have been looked after; and the voice of the local authority , to answer these questions. This book also brings together academics, specialist practitioners and project managers, to give their report on how partnership is working in practice.
This book brings together contributions from many of the partners, both service users and practitioners who are, in one way or another, working together under the Children Act 1989: Shirley Jackson, Family Rights Group; Young people from the Dolphin Project being looked after by local authorities; Rob Hutchinson, Deputy Director of Hampshire Social Services. Nina Swarup and Carol Hayden from SSRIU, University of Portsmouth; Jackie Powell and Elizabeth Marks, University of Southampton; Professor Colin Pritchard, University of Southampton; Dr Christine Smalley, Consultant Paediatrician, Community Child Health, Southampton; Adrian Faupel, Senior Educational Psychologist, Hampshire; Geoff Poulton, Chair of Scope.
