Nitric oxide was nominated as "molecule of the year" by "Science" in 1992. This novel messenger molecule is present, not only in the endothelial cells where it was first discovered, but also in neurones and immunocompetent cells including microglia and astrocytes. Thus, it is likely to provide clues into the potential physiological and pathological interactions between the vascular, the immune and the nervous systems. This book contains the proceedings of the First International Meeting on Nitric Oxide: Brain and Immune System, held in Calabria, Italy in September 1992. The meeting brought together specialists from these fields in an attempt to pull together the still diverse research into a coherent field dealing with the understanding of the communication and reciprocal interaction between the brain and the immune system. Nitric oxide, which is providing insights into many areas of biology, is likely to play a major role in these interactions, and many further revelations can be anticipated for the future.
