Description

A number of perspectives are brought together in this collection of essays. The first paper analyzes the social role that the early Chishti dargahs played in Indian society, while the second and third look at the historical, legendary and administrative aspects of the dargah in Bahraich. There are other essays on Muslim shrines in Patna, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Ajmer, Srinagar and Aligarh. Economic and cultural facets of pilgrimages to dargahs are discussed, along with the pir-murid relationship, Islamic thinking on the cult of saints, Sufism in India, and the position of poetry and music in Islamic culture.
