Over the past 20 years protest movements have dramatically shaken the complacency of modern western society, posing new questions about the changing nature of power relations and placing new issues on the political agenda. While protest movements have demanded responses from those in power that have significantly transformed the ways in which our society is organised, they have also revealed the limits governing more fundamental changes. Despite encountering concerted political resistance, the Black movement, women's movement, gay and lesbian movements, peace movement and green movement have all left their political mark, overcoming serious obstacles to achieve their aims. Verity Burgmann provides a coherent survey of the political ideas and activities pursued by these movements and assesses their respective impacts on the wider society. She examines each movement sympathetically, but not uncritically, from a position supportive of their aspirations yet sceptical about some of their directions.
