内容説明
Within the context of recent volatile change, this book examines the evolution of Albania and the Albanian people, and assesses its potential role in the common European home of the 21st century. The territorial discrepancy between the Albanian state and the disposition of the Albanian people is highlighted by an assessment of the question of Kosovo and the Albanian diaspora, now brought sharply into focus with the violent break-up of Yugoslavia. The country's and people's past, present and likely future is viewed within the perspective of rapidly changing and uncertain national, Balkan and European circumstances. Can Albania become the Switzerland of Eastern Europe, emerging into the next century as a wealthy, developed state, prospering on tourism and value-added high technology? Or is it doomed to be Europe's pauper state, surviving through the begging bowl and the export of cheap labour? It is concluded that in the interests of Albanian integrity and European stability, a close relationship with the European Community is likely to be the most favourable way forward.
