This volume brings together a multidisciplinary group of experts to explore how nutrition can meet the quantitative needs inherent in the altered metabolism of acutely ill patients suffering from multiple organ failure. The contributors examine organ metabolism and nutrition in the light of recent knowledge of cell biology, discuss the role of malnutrition in organ failure, and assess the potential benefits of the selective use of nutrients for support of individual organs. Each section combines the observations of laboratory investigators and clinical scientists, aiming to provide a balanced perspective on fresh concepts that can influence the care of critically ill patients in future years. Major sections focus on substrates and acute catabolism; the inflammatory state and tissue injury; gastrointestinal function; hepatic function; and pulmonary function and gas exchange.
