Fresh approaches to peace-building in the Middle East, coupled with traditional resources for conflict resolution, are the focus of this interdisciplinary volume. The book begins with the ""Commission Document"", which gives particular attention to civil society, transnational non-governmental linkages, and the ways these interact with state and intergovernmental structures. The subsequent background studies explore the critical issues of democratisation, human rights and gender roles in today's Middle East; current diplomatic activity in the region; emerging alternative security strategies; and economic development issues. The closing section looks to the future, identifying the many resources in civil society for building a peaceful culture that can sustain workable sociopolitical structures.
