This collection of 34 papers from the Congress of the International courtly Literature Society is divided into five sections. The first, Configuring the Feminine, attests that women's studies have reopened significant questions concerning early texts, particularly with regard to sexuality and gender. The second, Lyric Voice, Poetic Style, addresses questions of subjectivity and cross-cultural transmission. Section Three, Amor: Ethos and Affect, focuses on a central thematicelement in much of courtly literature. Fictions of Identity and Alterity are taken up by papers in section four and finally, Culture and Historiography: Perspectives and Reappraisals, brings to prominence questions of literacy, literary production and reception across most areas of the medieval courtly world.
