Wilm wrote in the preface to this book that his examination of the philosophy of Schiller was not intended to be a technical or exhaustive treatment of the work. Instead, he sought to give an account which would be fairly intelligible to the non-philosophical reader, of the main stages of Schiller's reflective thought and their historical relations, an understanding of which is necessary for the comprehension of the poet's character and literary productions. On original publication, Wilm's volume was the first significant study in English of Schiller's philosophical thinking. Appended with a comprehensive bibliography, this reads as an authoritative guide to Schiller's literary and philosophical thinking.
