This work emphasizes the role of microfungi in biodeterioration, including the deterioration of building materials and foodstuffs, and in biotechnology, including the production of pharmaceuticals and agents for biological control. Mycotoxins and microbial volatiles are covered, as well as fungal infections, allergy and other adverse reactions to moulds. The second part of the book provides a current description of 34 common mold and yeast species. Each species's description is comprehensive, covering general biology, ecology, practical application, damaging effects and the production of specific metabolites, including microbial volatiles. The impact of microfungi on people and the environment is illustrated by educational case reports and illustrations, including scanning electron micrographs. The book should be of interest to: specialists in biology and medicine (especially allergology and occupational medicine); professionals in such technical disciplines as biotechnology, architecture and building construction; and students in biology, biochemistry and medicine interested in the diversity of microfungi.
