内容説明
This study explores the complex interdependence between the small Caribbean states and the United States, and their changing relationship through history to the present day. The central difficulty for the small state is to discern where and when synergies might be found in the relations with the powerful, in this case the US. Their need for co-operation and a sharing of interests and values has to be combined with a respect on both sides for democratic and human rights. This theme is traced first through history from 1823 to the ending of the Cold War, then through the US response to the marxist challenge, and finally in different aspects of the modern Caribbean, such as the problems of drug trafficking, offshore interests and migration. The book concludes with a discussion on the limits to sovereignty and the challenges which have evolved in US-Caribbean relations. Anthony Maingot is the co-author of "A Short History of the West Indies", and author of "Small Country Development and International Labour Flows: Experiences in the Caribbean".
