内容説明

This book is part of a series which looks at men in various aspects of history from the late 18th century to the present day. Each book explores a particular theme, and through documentary evidence, quotations and contemporary pictures, evaluates the often neglected contribution ordinary women and more well-known figures have played in shaping history. This series provides valuable background reading for GCSE studies and Standard Grade in Scotland. This book takes a look at women's involvement in the different fields of art; from acting, ballet, fine art and music to the "lesser arts" and design. It highlights the difficulties faced by women in these fields, and gives students an detailed understanding of women's contribution. Personal quotations juxtapose the text and six case studies of the lives of some of the most inspiring women make the subject come to life. Elizabeth Thompson might have been the favourite painter of Queen Victoria, but the Royal Academy refused to accept her because she did not fulfill their rules as "a man of fair moral character". Such an example illustrates just how difficult it was for women to be accepted, and taken seriously in the world of art. The book charts the changing role and status of actresses, and looks at the history of the British National Theatre, the Old Vic, and the contribution of Lilian Baylis. The gradual development of ballet is studied, form its strong Soviet influence to the founding of Britain's own Sadler's Wells Company. The book includes a history project. The author also wrote many of the "Know Your Pet" titles.
