Four years after the end of the Cold War, the shape of international politics in the wider Europe is still unclear. This book brings together an international group of authors to consider the dynamics of change in the region. The text offers a survey of recent developments in Western Europe, East Central Europe, the Balkans and the former Soviet Union, setting contemporary events and prospects against an historical background. It includes a set of thematic accounts of major trends in the fields of economic change, domestic politics, sociological developments and security, each comparing West and East European developments. An interpretation of the impact of change in Europe on international relations in the outside world, and assesments of European change by Japanese and Middle Eastern authors are included. In addition, the introduction and conclusion examine the new patterns of co-operation and conflict in post-Cold War Europe and the policy options available for influencing them.
