This edition, based on a new examination of the manuscript evidence, is the first modern critical edition of the Old English translation of the Latin gospels, one of the most fascinating achievements of the later Anglo-Saxon period. The text has been designed to offer readers and scholars a better understanding of the nature of the translation, a clearer view of the relations between the textual traditions, and a more faithful representation of the style and format of the manuscripts. The introduction contains a description of all surviving manuscripts and fragments of the text, a discussion of the origins and relationships of the manuscripts, and a statement of editorial policy. This text should have relevance for scholars and students of Old English language and literature, Christianity, culture, and early history.
