This edition, based on a new examination of the manuscript evidence, is the first modern critical edition of the Old English translation of the Latin gospels, one of the most fascinating achievements of the later Anglo-Saxon period. The text has been designed to offer readers and scholars a better understanding of the nature of the translation, a clearer view of the relations between the textual traditions, and a more faithful representation of the style and format of the manuscripts. The introduction contains a description of all surviving manuscripts and fragments of the text, a discussion of the origins and relationships of the manuscripts, and a statement of editorial policy. This companion volume to OS 304 (1994) completes the edition. This new volume contains an account of the original Latin texts from which the Old English translation derives. It considers the translation methods used, evidence of authorship, orthography and language, and textual transmission. The Old English translations of the Latin Gospels are considered to be one of the major literary and cultural achievements of the late Anglo-Saxon period. This is the first modern edition of those translations. It includes an index of the biblical passages described and a glossary.
