This text aims to help in acurately assessing the potential impact or risks resulting from the utilization of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in the rhizosphere. Contributors review methods and strategies applied to the detection, identification and monitoring of micro-organisms in the rhizosphere. Major topics treated include: construction of genetically marked rhizosphere bacteria; detection of marked GMOs; identification of GMOs by DNA probes and PCR amplification; rapid typing of non-modified and GMOs by PCR-based techniques; and risk assessment associated with gene transfer. In addition, technologies for modifying gene expression and gene products for specific traits of agronomic interest in genetically engineered rhizosphere bacteria are covered.
