The pressing problem of river pollution, caused mainly by sewage and industrial effluent is addressed in this publication. As conventional methods to control pollution are expensive and often difficult to use in less developed countries, the search for an economic solution has led to the use of macrophytes. This has proved to be an effective and cheaper way of purifying waters in both developed and developing countries. This book facilitates the exchange of information on recent research in this field, from various parts of the world. The topics covered in this book include: treatment of domestic wastewater in small communities using macrophytes; treatment of industrial effluents; a combined soil/water hyacinth method; use of water hyacinth in ruminant nutrition; removal of toxic heavy metals; problems and advantages related to the use of aquatic plants in pollution control.
