内容説明・目次

内容説明

A collection of translated extracts from Greek writers from Homer to Pausanias. The extracts are organised into chapters with a brief linking narrative under the following headings - War, The Enquiring Mind, Ships and the Sea, Everyday Life, The Theatre, Time Off, Gods, Omens and Oracles. The purpose is to construct a picture of Greek life using as far as possible the Greeks' own words. The editors allow the original sources to speak for themselves and their linking commentary simply ensures that there is a continuity in each chapter and provides explanations and background where necessary. For the second edition the translations have been modernised, the ancient sources made clearer, and the book has a new four-colour cover.
