This study discusses ways of resolving labour disputes from a practical perspective. Rather than limiting themselves to written sources, the authors have based their thesis on the experiences of professionals working in the field of labour dispute settlement. In order to obtain the necessary information the authors devised a questionnaire which was distributed among a number of professional mediators and conciliators in Europe. The data which they obtained in this manner formed an important source of information for this study, as did personal interviews, meetings of mediators and workshops. The settlement of labour disputes by using non-juridical tools and methods, which forms the central theme of this book, has become an increasingly popular topic among those interested in labour law and labour relations in general, in particular in the wider European context. This text focuses on the rationale for a mediation agency at a European level, and considers which currently-existing national agency should serve as a model for such an agency. The conclusion stresses the need for collecting and exchanging information about the practice of mediation, conciliation and arbitration in labour disputes, which may serve practical as well as purely academic needs.
